Vice Chancellors Salaries
In the United Kingdom, the average total remuneration for university vice-chancellors has seen fluctuations over the years. As of the most recent data available, here are some key points:
- In the academic year 2022-23, the average vice-chancellor’s total remuneration stood at £325,000, which represents a 5% rise compared to the previous year1.
- In the academic year 2017-18, the average basic salary for vice-chancellors in England was £253,000, while the average total remuneration package (including bonuses, one-off payments, and pensions) was £299,0002.
- Notably, six universities in England paid their vice-chancellors £500,000 or more in salary, bonuses, and benefits during the same period. Additionally, nearly half of all vice-chancellors received more than £300,0003.
These figures highlight the significant variation in vice-chancellor pay across different institutions. While some universities have implemented pay restraint, others continue to offer substantial compensation to their senior leadership. The debate around executive pay in higher education remains ongoing, especially considering the financial challenges faced by the sector and the need for equitable distribution of resources.

Solidarity with UCU Northumbria. Our comrades at Northumbria University are facing an unprecedented attack on their pensions, essentially a forcible switch from the TPS scheme to a much less favourable one. This could happen to any post-92 university, including us, unless we oppose this at Northumbria. UCU Northumbria University have already started strike action. We were able to get a member of the UCU Teesside executive committee up to Newcastle yesterday to talk to pickets and show solidarity. You can: Donate to the branch hardship fund here: Unity Trust Bank, UCU Northumbria Univ NE119, Hardship Fund, SC 608301, AN 20295578.
